LTA’s Inaugural Scholarship Awards Two “Stars” in the Local Alexandria Theatre Community
The Little Theatre of Alexandria, one of the oldest
community theatre companies in the country, has chosen to honor two of it’s
junior members with scholarships that will enable them to pursue their future
goals in theatre and beyond. LTA believes strongly in supporting the Alexandria
community, and with it their young talent. The awards were presented at LTA’s
Annual Meeting in June. This is the first year LTA has provided a scholarship
opportunity.
The “Actor Award” was presented to Maya Brettell (18), a
young home-schooled actor who embodies the spirit of LTA. Her theatre
accomplishments – at LTA and at other local theatres – run the gamut of
professional, community and regional theatre. In addition to commercial work,
Maya has performed in Signature Theatre’s world premiere of “Beaches” as Young
Bertie, danced as Louise Bigelow in Baltimore’s version of “Carousel,” was
nominated for a WATCH award for her portrayal of “Annie” at KAT, and most
recently starred in Washington, D.C.’s renowned Wooly Mammoth theatre, in a
production of “The Nether.”
Maya’s started her career at LTA when she was cast as a
chorus boy in “Scrooge: The Musical” in 2007. Since that time she has performed
at LTA in “Gypsy” as well as spending countless hours backstage assisting with
props and wardrobe on more than half a dozen shows. Maya plans to pursue acting at Catholic University, majoring
in theatre, in the fall.
The “Techie Award” was presented to Eleana Delaney (18), a
recent graduate of Bishop Ireton High School. Eleana performed twice in LTA’s
“Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and was an understudy in “Tommy.” She has
assisted backstage with props, helped at several LTA parties, and worked in the
LTA office for 4 years. She is a classic example of a community volunteer.
