Meet Boeing Boeing Cast Member Joshua Rich
What do you find appealing about your character and this
show?
I think Bernard is charming and likeable, even though he is rather sexist
and perhaps a tad immoral. I love how he
honestly loves each of his fiancés in different ways. And I love how he gets flustered easily but
always manages to regain control quickly.
Overall, I love the wit, pace, charm and warmth of this show. It is sweet and romantic in its own way.
What have you learned about yourself in playing the role
of Bernard?
I have learned many
things. One of them is how to have more
confidence, like Bernard does, and how to live life more to the fullest. I have also learned a lot about myself
personally and as an actor in this part.
I feel I have grown a lot in my ability, confidence and stage presence.
What do you want the audience to experience/take away
from this show?
First and foremost, I want them to be entertained! I come from the old-school of show business
-- make 'em laugh! I love the old
screwball comedies of the 1930's and '40's, and I think one thing we may have
lost a bit in recent years is the simplicity and value of a happy ending, which
this play offers.
How does this show differ from other shows you have
worked on?
It is much lighter and
physical than other plays I have starred in.
It requires a much more focused kind of timing and pacing between all of
the actors, which requires a more intensive rehearsal process, as well as a lot
of trust between all of us.
How long have you been acting and what made you get
involved in theatre?
I have been acting for a few years -- for many years
prior I focused on being a pianist, composer, director, teaching artist and
playwright. Once I stepped onto the
stage, I was hooked! I have always loved
theatre and even when I was working in front of the actors, I enjoyed the
entire process. Now that I am in front
of the audience, I couldn't be happier!
How did you get involved with LTA?
By coming to an audition for
"Proof". I wasn't right for that part, but fell in love with the
theatre instantly, and as soon as I saw the audition for "Boeing
Boeing", I wasted no time! The community is wonderful - warm, inviting,
professional. It is truly a joy to be
part of LTA.
What advice would you give others who are interested in
working in theatre?
Get out there! Try everything! Audition for any and everything that you
think you are right for, and remember that it only takes one
"yes". Auditions help you
become a stronger actor, even when you don't get the part. Don't be afraid to volunteer to be backstage,
or usher -- whatever gets you in the door.
If you want to be a part of the magical world of theatre, the Universe
will see fit to bring it to you!
